GNAT’s Nkabom project (“Nkabom” means “a coming together”) assists teachers in addressing these challenges. Professional Development and Community Mobilization) have been part of the project since 2009. In 2015 Gender Equality aspects were significantly strengthened and a more rigorous data-gathering and monitoring system implemented. The project works with clusters of schools in each of Ghana’s 10 regions.• Professional Development is provided for all teachers and school heads in project schools with follow up mentoring and support. Workshops also include the provision and use of locally relevant children’s readers developed through GNAT and the Pan African Teachers’ Centre.• Community Mobilization assists villages in developing and implementing action plans in support of their children’s schooling, and in strengthening the overall community and its voice. Project title: Upper primary female science and maths projectHost organization: Ghana National Association of TeachersCooperating organisations: Ghana Education ServiceCountry: GhanaRegion: AfricaStart date: 09/12/2018End date: 31/08/2019Project Categories:Quality TeachingDescription:the female upper primary science and mathematics project was initiated by GNAT to equip upper primary female teachers with content knowledge and pedagogical skills in science and mathematics. The project was occasioned by our realization that majority of female teachers in ghana teach in primary schools, particularly the lower primary. It was also discovered that more of these teachers have low content knowledge and lack of adequate pedagogical skills to offer any quality teaching as far as science and mathematics are concerned. The trend is nt surprising though, since ghana has, for at least, the past few decades recorded low attainments amongst students in science and mathematics at all levels. The project targets upper primary female teachers, who after a year long on-the-job training will become resource persons for their schools, clusters and circuits. The project targets a deprived district in each year. Not less than eighty participants are trained. The project involves at least four (4) sessions of training workshops and field trips to participating schools. Each participating school is given almost all equipment required for the teaching and learning of science and mathematicsGoals:1. Equip female teachers of primary schools content knowledge and pedagogical skills in science and mathematics2. Motivate female pupils in science and mathematics3. Create a school-based core of resource persons for science and mathematics4. Networking participants for sharing of professional knowledgeActivities:1. Training workshops in primary science and mathematics for participants2. Supply of science and mathematics equipment to participating schools3. Follow-up to schools of participants4. Follow-up workshops for participants5. Identification of challenges from the perspective of participants6. Finding solution to challenges through peer review7. At least four follow-up visits to participating schools8. Graduation of participants and award of certificatesResults:1. The establishment of science corners in all the participating schools2. Teachers in the participating schools taking interest in school-based insets, with female graduates of the programme serving as resource persons3. Lessons now more investigative and child-centred4.
