#WorldTeachersDay | Lessons from the Pandemic: “Unleashing the transformative power of education”, by Camilla Croso.

In his seminal text "Pedagogy of the Oppressed", Brazilian scholar Paulo Freire writes, “Knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other.” I believe this encapsulates education’s transformative power. It is only through dialogue and critical thinking that meaningful learning can be realised. This has far-reaching consequences for our societies and here, teachers lead the way.

In this World Teachers Day, we must come together and pay tribute to teachers across the world who yesterday, today and tomorrow will continue to be restless agents of change, central to the pursuit of the right to education for all, through their efforts in ensuring students flourish to their full potential, in honoring the accumulated learning of past generations, in instigating a spirit of interrogation, curiosity and imagining, and in fostering a sense of humility, belonging and commitment to communities and the planet. At a moment where human rights and democracies around the world are increasingly under threat, valuing the role of the teaching profession, their academic freedom and their voice in decision making is an urgent endeavor.
