Description:
TTU is developing a child labour free zone in the Mangae and Melela constituencies (Mvomero district) since 2017. It aims at eliminating child labour in these districts where many children are exploited in domestic service, agriculture, animal husbandry, gemstone mining, etc. 8 schools have been involved in this project.

Main activities :
- Develop a handbook in Swahili to train Mangae and Melela teachers on national and international norms on child labour, communication with parents, extra-curricular activities that can be carried out against child labour,
- Train Mangae and Melela teachers on those topics,
- Organise school clubs whereby games and sports are used to motivate pupils attendance and discourage school trop out,
- Trained teachers visit households to talk to parents about the importance of education,
- Conduct remedial classes to pupils who missed classes due to child labour,
- Involve the religious and traditional leaders, who have a great influence in the communities,
- Preparation and distribution of leaflets and posters against child labour,
- Advocacy for school feeding programmes.
Results:
Among the main results:
- Reduced truancy and dropout,
- Increased awareness on child labour among children, with pupils monitoring one another,
- Improved cooperation between village leaders, school management committee members, teachers and parents,
- Parents are more dedicated to education. Awareness is such that some parents are creating their own committees to sensitize others to the importance of education,
- Reduced use of corporal punishment by teachers,
- Improved school results.
